Our History
Our family farm began in 1932 with the purchase of the original homestead in the rolling hills near the Des Moines River in central Iowa. Beef cattle have been our business since the beginning, starting with just a few cows during the challenging times of the 1930s. As our family business has grown over the years, our commitment to producing quality beef has never changed. Our multi-generational operation currently raises cattle on the productive grasslands of central and south central Iowa, and feeds cattle in the middle of one of the most fertile farming regions in the world. We are 100% family owned and operated, and all family members contribute in their own way. We are proud to offer our family farm raised beef to consumers in our own neighborhood and now to PrizeMart customers in Hong Kong. Our Lacona Farms quality Angus beef is named after the small town in Iowa where our largest ranch is located.
The Land
Our family’s farm has expanded from the original homestead plot to include grazing lands in three counties in central and south central Iowa. The productive land and distinct seasons in Iowa allow for the growth of numerous species of grasses and forages that our beef cattle graze upon. Our lands consist of open grasslands and pasture, hardwood timber, hills, valleys, ponds, and creeks. Along with our cattle, these areas also support a wide variety of plants and many species of wildlife. As part of our business, we feel it is essential to preserve and improve our land and natural resources, and we manage them accordingly.
The Cattle
On our family farm we are involved in every aspect of the beef cattle lifecycle. We do everything ...from delivering newborn calves, to grazing cows and calves through the Iowa summers, to growing and harvesting our own forages and crops for their feed, to feeding them on cold winter mornings, and finally to the sale of quality beef to consumers worldwide. Throughout the entire process, our cattle are always treated humanely.
The Beef
Our market-ready cattle are humanely harvested and the beef is cut to order, vacuum-sealed, and frozen in Omaha, Nebraska. Lacona Farms Angus beef is inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and certified for export. The final product is truly exceptional beef for your table and ours.
